Artist/Author In the Spotlight: Jake Finch
Meet Jake Finch
In late January 2007, Jake Finch's first book, "Fast, Fun & Easy Book Cover Art," (link opens a new window) was released by C&T Publishing.
Based mostly on her original techniques, "Fast, Fun & Easy Book Cover Art" shows even the novice crafter/sewer how to turn small quilts into book covers using quilt making techniques and heavy interfacing such as fast2fuse (link opens a new window) or Timtex (link opens a new window).
These projects are perfect for small amounts of fabric, leftover quilt blocks and many use scrapbook embellishments to enhance the designs. Used to cover scrapbooks, journals, binders, sketchbooks, checkbooks and any other type of "book," the results of the Cover Art creations are beautiful and practical. They make wonderful, personal and treasured gifts and serve as a wonderful canvas for fiber art creations with a useful result.
In 2006, one of Jake's sketchbook covers won second place in the Hoffman Challenge accessories category. Her entry can be viewed here: http://www.hoffmanchallenge.com/2006challenge/winners06/accessories2nd2006.html
A native New Yorker, Jake started sewing in the late 1980s when she traded in her credit cards for a new sewing machine. She figured she could make the clothes she was spending so much money buying and her husband reluctantly agreed. In 1989, after sewing clothes for two years, she made her first quilt and found a new addiction. As a completely self-taught closet quilter for many years, Jake solitarily devoured how-to books and visited shows to hone her skills, a process which involved making every mistake possible in quilting and which now humbles and guides her when teaching her students new quilting techniques. She loves contemporary art quilts and traditional pieced quilts updated in today's fabrics.
She began to teach quilting five years ago and loves working with anyone wanting to learn and create. Few pleasures top watching someone realize a new skill and their pride of accomplishment and Jake is honored to sometimes help quilters with that.
Jake's most recent book, Comfort Quilts from the Heart was released in 2008. She writes for several national quilt magazines and teaches and lectures for guilds and retreats. Additionally, Jake serves as the managing editor for Mark Lipinski's Quilter's Home Magazine.
Married to Stephen for 20 years, they have a young daughter, Samantha, four cats and live in Simi Valley, California. Jake may be reached at alljake @ hotmail .com (remove the spaces) or through her website jakefinchdesigns.com.
She loves to see how other people create their Cover Art and welcomes any feedback or questions.
